Beer Guide: Nr. 001 - Birra Peja (Kosovo)

Fulham Road's Finest is proud to announce its latest feature: its very own beer guide! Starting today with Birra Peja that originates in the drinking nation that is Kosovo. Although not visible on the bottle, this is supposed to be a Pilsner but can definitely not be compared to Pilsner beer one might know from Germany or the Czech Republic. I would say it is something between a Pilsner and a regular lager beer but still does the job. Decent beer, probably tastes a lot fresher and better on tap, but this has yet to be discovered. All in all, 5 out of 10.

Zurich I - When Ficken missed that field goal...

25 degrees, sunshine, 5 o clock on a Saturday, the perfect surroundings for our first drinking tour through Zurich. Our goal: Badenerstrasse

FORUM (Badenerstrasse 120), a place recently visited by David Beckham and Prince William when they failed to convince the Blatter Mafia to bring the World Cup back to England, is our starting point. 4.80 SFR for a "Stange" which in that place contains not 0.3l but 0.25l. Small difference one might say, we say to everyone considering this move: Stop it! It will affect your reviews very badly.

Our second stop, and this proves the point that we check out every, and I mean every, drinking location there could be: TAKE EASY TAKE AWAY (Badenerstrasse 213), a Thai restaurant that even has draft beer. One real "Stange" for 4 SFR, not much to complain about. We try drinking it slowly but fail as usual. Off to the next one then.

After going international, we go local, very local. The HOCKSTÜBLI BAR (not so sure about the name, it's to the left after the Thai take away) is your typical, traditional Swiss pub. A few regulars besides you at the bar, a Dart board at the wall (although not sure whether this thing still works) and of course some liquid gold, a.k.a. beer. Same prices as in FORUM, however for 0.3l glass.

Just across the street, we find the CAFE BAR KIVOTOS, a Greek restaurant/bar and our perfect stop number 4. If the bar is meant to represent the current crisis in Greece, it does its job perfectly. No other customers except us, the beer pump doesn't work anymore and the interior has also seen better times. Apart from that, it's pure gold: A 0.5l can for 5 SFR, free snacks to go with the beer and after a chat with the owner, who managed to survive 30 years in Switzerland without picking up even the simplest words in German, we get some Ouzo shots. This is how it should be all the time! So don't waste any time, visit the KIVOTOS and down some shots of the delicious Ouzo.

We leave our new Greek friend and pick the YELLOW DOOR BAR as our next beer provider. Cool barkeeper, free snacks and 5 SFR for a "Stange". There was some kind of jazz concert later that evening, surely a thing on the bucket list for the next few weeks, but not for this evening (anymore).

Next up, the CAFE BAR FAVORIT, which on first sight looks more like a cafeteria in an elderly home. 4.20 SFR for a "Stange" and some exciting backgammon games going on between some Italian natives. As they play for cash, we should definitely come back and kick their arses. But first, we probably should learn the game properly though.

RISTORANTE TAVERNE is our lucky number seven. Two "Stangen" (5 SFR) come here with a complimentary wine from their cellar. Well, not quite, but the fact is: We now have a wine bottle. It's also fact that we, how could it be any different, empty the bottle during our next couple of stops. The wine was a Planeta Merlot 2007 and should be enjoyed with tuna or steak (price: about 40 SFR).

PLAY BAR
and not Playboy-Bar how it is sometimes written in the Web. A lovely Bulgarian brings us two "Stangen" of beer for 5 SFR each. And she opens our bottle of wine, thanks!

Close to the PLAYBAR is the VERSUS SPORTS BAR which has 3 high definition TV screens on which we watch the 4th quarter of the Penn State game. Long story short, the lost to Virginia 17-16 and fell to 0-2, their worst start to a season since 2001. Their kicker, Ficken (seriously, your name is Ficken! And you play for Penn State!) missed 4 field goals. The barkeeper offered that we can drink the bottle of wine for 10 SFR in his bar, we gladly declined and downed it on the street.

Last up, probably (or probably not, now we know most definitely not)
DINI MUETTER (looked it up, it is RESTAURANT HARDHOF), I have no recollection whatsoever and only remember trying to fuck up some old dude's date. After that, complete and utter blackout till home. All in all, a normal Saturday evening.

Alright, that was the first of probably many more reviews to come. The aim is to improve the quality of the blog all the time and broaden the horizon of drinking beer in Zurich and many more cities. There are also some pictures to enjoy in my next post.

Fulham Road's Finest is under way

There are many things a man can do with his life. Drinking beer is better than all these things. (Anonymous)

Fulham Road's Finest is not your ordinary pub, bar or club guide. Two borderline-alcoholics will go to their absolute limits to bring you the information about every possible drinking location there is. Our opinions are independent, totally biased if we get something for free and as the evening progresses our recollection ranges from blurry to non-existent.

The blogger wants to make clear that this site doesn't promote drinking. It only promotes excessive drinking and getting absolutely shithammered.
